Reiki - What is it?
Melissa Fikuart | MAR 5

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that works with the body’s natural life force energy. The word itself comes from two Japanese words:
Rei – universal or spiritual wisdom
Ki – life force energy
This life force energy flows through all living beings. When that energy is flowing freely, we tend to feel balanced, calm, and well. When it becomes blocked or depleted—often from stress, trauma, illness, or emotional strain—we may experience physical discomfort, fatigue, anxiety, or emotional imbalance.
Reiki practitioners are trained to gently channel this universal life force energy through their hands to support the body’s natural ability to heal and restore balance.
During a Reiki session, the client typically relaxes comfortably while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body. Many people experience deep relaxation, warmth, tingling sensations, emotional release, or simply a peaceful sense of calm.
Every experience is unique, but the goal is always the same: to support the body in returning to a state of harmony.
In a world where so many of us are constantly in “go mode,” our nervous systems often carry more stress than we realize. We move through busy schedules, emotional challenges, and the demands of daily life without always giving our bodies the space they need to rest and reset.
This is one of the reasons I feel so deeply connected to Reiki. It is a gentle, supportive practice that invites the body back into a state of balance.
But many people still ask the same question when they first hear about it:
What exactly is Reiki, and how does it work?
One of the most powerful effects many people notice after a Reiki session is how deeply relaxed they feel. From a physiological perspective, this is often related to the regulation of the nervous system.
Our nervous system has two primary states:
Sympathetic Nervous System - Often called the “fight or flight” response. This is activated when we are under stress, pressure, or perceived danger.
Parasympathetic Nervous System - Often called the “rest and digest” state. This is where the body can relax, repair, and restore itself.
In modern life, many of us spend far too much time in a sympathetic state. Chronic stress can keep the body on high alert, making it difficult to truly relax. Reiki helps create an environment where the body feels safe enough to shift out of stress mode and into a more relaxed parasympathetic state.
When the nervous system begins to settle, many things can happen naturally:
• Heart rate may slow
• Breathing deepens
• Muscles relax
• Stress hormones decrease
• The body’s natural healing processes can activate
This is why people often describe Reiki sessions as deeply calming, grounding, and restorative.
Reiki does not “fix” or “force” anything in the body. Instead, it supports the body’s innate wisdom and ability to heal itself.
Think of it like creating the right conditions for a garden to grow. When the soil, water, sunlight, and environment are supportive, plants naturally thrive. Reiki helps create those supportive conditions within the body and energetic system.
People often seek Reiki for support with:
• Stress and anxiety
• Emotional overwhelm
• Fatigue or burnout
• Sleep challenges
• Grief or life transitions
• General energetic balance and well-being
It can also be a beautiful way to reconnect with yourself, slow down, and simply receive care in a safe and nurturing space.
It is important to understand that Reiki and other forms of energy healing are not a replacement for medical care, diagnosis, or treatment.
Reiki is considered a complementary or supportive practice, meaning it can be used alongside conventional medical care to support relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being.
If you are experiencing medical or mental health concerns, it is always important to work with a qualified healthcare provider.
Many people find that integrating supportive practices like Reiki with traditional care helps them feel more balanced and supported in their overall healing journey.
One of the things I love most about offering Reiki sessions is creating a space where people can simply pause.
No expectations.
No performance.
Just a quiet moment to breathe, rest, and allow the body to soften.
In a world that constantly asks us to do more, Reiki gently reminds us that healing often begins when we allow ourselves to slow down.
If you are curious about experiencing Reiki for yourself, I would love to hold space for you.
Sessions are offered in my peaceful Reiki room inside Moonlit Meadows Apothecary in Marion, IA, where the environment is designed to support deep relaxation and energetic balance.
Nourish yourself now and into the future
